Timbuktu Educational Foundation Gathers Dignitaries and Top African Scholars
to Launch Preservation Campaign for Ancient African Texts
(Oakland, CA)- September 4, 2002. - Musa Baldé, CEO of the Timbuktu
Educational Foundation (TEF) is proud to announce the launching of their
"Preserve-A-Manuscript" campaign with "Reviving the Past
for Future Success, a fundraising dinner, on Saturday, September
14, 2002 from 6:00pm to 10:00pm in the Rotunda Building located at 300
Frank H. Ogawa Plaza in Oakland. Tickets are $100.00; RSVP by September
10, 2002. Registration can be done on the website (www.timbuktufoundation.org).
Future dinners will be held in other cities including Los Angeles, Atlanta,
and Washington, DC during 2003.
TEFs mission is to restore and preserve over 700,000 manuscripts
of early African scholars dating back to the 9th Century. These manuscripts
are in the Timbuktu University Library in Mali. These artifacts helped
lay a foundation for early civilization, including Western Civilization.
They cover many subjects including mathematics, language, physics, medicine,
astronomy, geography, government development and jurisprudence.
TEF is committed to presenting this cultural legacy through educational
programs and exhibitions in the United States and throughout the world.
At 6 PM there will be a reception with the Ambassador of Mali, Cheick
Omar Diarrah. The dinners keynote speaker will be Imam W. Deen Mohammed
of the Muslim American Society.
Other speakers that evening will be internationally known scholars Dr.
Joyce King, Provost of Spelman College, Dr. Hassimi Maiga, Director of
Research, University of Mali, Dr. Wade Nobles, Executive Director of the
Institute for Advanced Study of Black Family Life and Culture, and Dr.
Sulayman Nyang, Head of African Studies, Howard University.
New Africa Drummers, a youth group from the Clara Mohammed School, Kourre
player Mamadou Sou and spoken word group, Calligraphy of Thought, will
provide entertainment throughout the evening.
